dozens of fires and acts of vandalism in a few weeks

The outbreak of the second Intifada, in the autumn, was followed in France by a wave of attacks against Jewish places of worship, on a scale unseen since the war.

Within a few weeks, dozens of synagogues and schools were set on fire, stoned, or vandalized, from Trappes to Villepinte, from Marseille to Créteil; incendiary devices were thrown at night, worshippers attacked as they left services. The incidents were concentrated in the suburbs of major cities.

This wave opened a new period in France: it durably installed police and military protection in front of community institutions, and brought into public debate the question of an antisemitism distinct from that of the far right.
