Bomb at the S-Bahn station targeting a group of Jewish immigrants from the former USSR leaving a language class

A group of Jewish immigrants from the former Soviet Union was attending a German language class in Düsseldorf. As they left, they took the staircase of an urban railway station where a homemade explosive device had been placed.

The explosion injured ten people, several of them seriously; a pregnant woman lost the child she was carrying. The victims were precisely those whom Germany had welcomed to rebuild its Jewish communities, decimated half a century earlier.

The investigation stalled for nearly twenty years, despite a far-right lead identified from the outset. The trial of the sole suspect would end in an acquittal, for lack of evidence, making this case one of the most discussed judicial failures in the country.
