Netanya, a seaside resort on the coastal plain close to the dividing line, was one of the cities most severely struck in Israel during the second Intifada.
In early March, a man detonated his charge in the heart of the city center, at the hour when the commercial streets were most crowded. Passersby were killed and dozens of others wounded.
This was the first of the many attacks that would target Netanya over the course of a few years: its center, its market, and its shopping center would be struck on multiple occasions, to the point that the city would become in Israel the very symbol of that period.
