The last deportation train leaves Westerbork for Auschwitz, a few days before the liberation of the southern part of the country.
The Westerbork camp, opened before the war by the Dutch authorities to receive refugees from Germany, had become under the occupation the departure point for all convoys leaving the Netherlands. The last train left the camp's station as the Allied armies approached; it carried, among others, the last families who had been held there under exemptions. The camp was liberated the following spring by Canadian troops, who found several hundred people still there.
