La Hongrie avait persécuté ses Juifs sans les déporter : lois d'exclusion dès la fin des années vingt, compagnies de travail forcé envoyées au front de l'Est, massacre de Kamenets-Podolsk et raid de Novi Sad. L'occupation allemande du pays, au printemps, change l'échelle.

Adolf Eichmann arrive à Budapest avec une équipe réduite, et c'est l'administration hongroise elle-même — préfets, gendarmerie, employés des chemins de fer — qui exécute le travail. En huit semaines, la province est vidée : ghettoïsation dans des briqueteries et des gares, puis convois quotidiens vers Auschwitz, à un rythme que le camp n'avait jamais connu, jusqu'à devoir brûler des corps en plein air. C'est la déportation la plus rapide de toute la Shoah. Elle s'arrête sur ordre du régent Miklós Horthy, sous la pression internationale et après la diffusion du rapport de deux évadés d'Auschwitz — les Juifs de Budapest sont alors les seuls encore en vie.
