after the acquittal of the accused, pogrom in several dozen localities, army sent to Presbourg and martial law proclaimed

The Tiszaeszlár trial, in which Jews were accused of having killed a young servant girl for a ritual purpose, ended in a complete acquittal, the prosecution's case having been dismantled piece by piece during the hearing. The verdict triggered riots in several dozen localities throughout Hungary: houses pillaged, shops ransacked, families in flight. The government dispatched troops, proclaimed martial law in Presbourg, and restored order within a few weeks. The affair left two opposing legacies — it made the trial a model of judicial refutation of the blood libel accusation, and it provided the first Hungarian political antisemitism with its theme and its men.
