Jewish quarter attacked, shops destroyed

That same month, the Jewish quarter of Rostov-on-Don is attacked and shops are destroyed.

Rostov lies outside the Pale of Settlement: only Jews authorized on an individual basis live there — first-guild merchants, skilled craftsmen, graduates. The pogrom demonstrates that personal status offers no more protection than collective belonging, and that the administrative line drawn between "useful" Jews and the rest counts for nothing in the street.
