In Tomsk, in Siberia, the theater building was set on fire with the protesters who had taken refuge inside, and those who attempted to exit were shot down.
The Tomsk pogrom was one of the deadliest of the wave, and it was not solely antisemitic: it targeted the supporters of the Manifesto, Jews and revolutionaries alike. This conflation is the hallmark of that autumn: the Black Hundreds regarded the constitution as a Jewish conspiracy, and their victims were designated by their political camp as much as by their birth.
