The interval between confinement and liquidation, nearly a year, distinguishes occupied Russia from regions annexed earlier. It is due to the proximity of the front and to the use of the labor force by the army. Smolensk is also the city near which the Germans would discover the Katyń pits, which they would exploit for propaganda — without this having changed anything in what they were doing at the same moment in the same region.
