The communities of Munkács, Ungvár, Huszt and the neighboring valleys are the first deported from Hungary to Auschwitz.
Subcarpathian Ruthenia, annexed to Hungary in 1939, was home to a Yiddish-speaking Judaism, poor and deeply observant, spread among the market towns of the valleys and the cities of Munkács, Ungvár, and Huszt.
Following the German occupation of Hungary in the spring, this region was the first to be targeted: its communities were gathered within a matter of days into improvised ghettos — brickworks, sawmills, timber depots — then deported to Auschwitz at the rate of several convoys per day, between mid-May and the beginning of June.
