The Shoah (1939–1945)

End of the Jewish community of Chania

20 mai 1944·La Canée

Toll
bilan non établi

The toll is reproduced exactly as the source states it — never rounded, never added to another. Tolls overlap from one event to the next.

The Jews of the town, arrested in Crete, are embarked on a ship sunk at sea off the island; none return, and the community ceases to exist.

The Jews of La Canée, arrested in the spring, are led to the port alongside prisoners of war and hostages, then embarked on a vessel bound for the mainland. The ship is sunk at sea off the coast of the island, with no chance of survival for those it carried. None return. The community of La Canée, established in Crete since Antiquity and enriched by successive exiles, ceases to exist that day; its synagogue, left abandoned, will not be restored until decades later.
