the Jewish quarter locked down by the governor, notables tortured, before the intervention of consuls and the sultan

That same year, an accusation of ritual murder was brought in Rhodes. The governor sealed off the Jewish quarter and had notables tortured to obtain confessions.

The affair was halted by the intervention of European consuls and the sultan, in the wake of Damascus. The simultaneity of the two episodes was not fortuitous: they arose in the same Ottoman world in crisis, where local Christian communities sought the support of the powers, and where the blood libel, imported from Europe, became an instrument of rivalry between protected minorities.
