Jews expelled from a zone of fifty versts along the borders of Prussia and Austria
The ukase of 20 April 1843 ordered the evacuation of a fifty-verst strip along the borders of the Russian Empire with Prussia and Austria. The Jewish families who had lived there, often for generations and often through cross-border trade, were required to withdraw toward the interior of the Pale of Settlement, with smuggling given as the stated reason.
Implementation stretched over several years and ran up against the material impossibility of rehousing those being displaced; extensions were granted, exceptions made, but the principle held. The measure added to the uprooting of the preceding decade and completed the transformation of the Empire's western border into a zone from which Jews had been administratively erased.
