Jewish families attacked, several killed
In June 1884, the Kanavino suburb of Nizhny Novgorod was the scene of a pogrom targeting Jewish families who had come for the great annual fair. Port workers and boatmen attacked lodgings and stalls; several people were killed, others thrown into the water, and goods were plundered before troops arrived.
The city lay outside the Pale of Settlement, and Jewish presence there was tolerated only for the duration of the fair: the victims therefore had neither an established neighborhood nor local protection. The episode shows that the violence of that decade did not stop at the boundaries of the Pale and followed Jews wherever the administration consented to let them pass.
