The Sephardic community of the island, one of the oldest in the Mediterranean, is embarked on barges and then deported to Auschwitz.
The Sephardic community of Rhodes, established after the expulsion from Spain and enriched by arrivals from Salonique and Asia Minor, was one of the oldest in the eastern Mediterranean; it lived in the Juderia quarter, within the city walls.
Summoned in the height of summer under the pretext of a document check, it was imprisoned and then loaded onto barges bound for Le Pirée, before a long train journey to Auschwitz. This is the most distant point in Europe from which a deportation convoy ever departed.
