the Jewish suburb attacked and burned by nationalist activists, its inhabitants cast into the street
On June 29, 1931, the Campbell district of Salonika, a shantytown suburb housing poor Jewish families — many of them survivors of the fire that had devastated the city some years earlier — was attacked and set ablaze by militants of the nationalist organization EEE. Its inhabitants were thrown into the streets and their shelters destroyed; the perpetrators would be acquitted.
The attack arose from the tensions generated by the settlement of Asia Minor refugees in Salonika and the competition for housing and work. It prompted several thousand Salonikan Jews, heirs to a Sephardic community four centuries old, to leave for Mandatory Palestine or for France.
