Deportation of the Jews of Nea Orestiada
mars 1943·Nea Orestiada
The toll is reproduced exactly as the source states it — never rounded, never added to another. Tolls overlap from one event to the next.
As throughout western Thrace administered by Bulgarian troops, the Jews of the city are gathered within hours and sent eastward.
As in all of western Thrace administered by Bulgarian troops, the Jews of Nea Orestiada are rounded up within a matter of hours and dispatched eastward. The city was young, born of the population exchanges of the preceding years, and its Jewish community had settled there alongside the other refugees. It vanished before it had time to take root. Nothing remains today of the Jewish presence in Nea Orestiada, save for a few names in registers.
