Serbian districts annexed by Bulgaria surrender their Jews: those of Pirot are gathered in spring and joined to convoys crossing the Danube toward the East.
Pirot, a city in eastern Serbia close to the border, was assigned to Bulgaria during the partition of the country. Its Jewish community, Sephardic in origin and largely impoverished, thus came under an administration that protected the Jews of its pre-war territory but handed over without hesitation those from the annexed provinces. In the spring, the Bulgarian police rounded up the families of Pirot in the early morning hours, held them in makeshift facilities, then transferred them to the regional concentration points. From there, they were joined to convoys that crossed the Danube and traveled eastward. The community was annihilated; Bulgaria never returned the property seized on that occasion.
