the Jewish quarter attacked, the community fleeing the island

In the wake of the ritual murder accusation brought in Corfou, the Jewish quarter of Zante was attacked and the community fled the island.

The Jews of the Ionian Islands are an ancient community, Romaniote and Italian, present for centuries. The Corfou affair scattered them within a matter of months: many left for Egypt, Trieste, or Italy. A single local accusation thus proved sufficient to erase a millennial presence, because it arose in a new kingdom where the minority had no protector left — neither Venice nor England, which had administered the islands before.
