The Jewish men of the city are summoned to Liberty Square, humiliated for hours in the sun under blows, then recorded for forced labor in the region's worksites.
The Jewish men of Salonique are summoned to the Place de la Liberté on a Saturday in July. Gathered from the morning, they are kept for hours in the sun, forced through exercises, beaten, photographed and filmed by their guards. The day has no other purpose than humiliation and registration: the lists drawn up will be used to distribute the men among the forced labor sites of the region. The community of Salonique, one of the largest and oldest in Europe, understands that day what awaits it. The memory of that Saturday has stayed with them under the name it was given.
