County seat of Zala, Zalaegerszeg saw its community and those of neighboring towns gathered in a camp on the outskirts, before the convoys of early summer.
Zalaegerszeg, the county seat of Zala, was home to a community that lived by agricultural trade and craftsmanship, with its Romantic-style synagogue built the previous century and its school. Following the German occupation of Hungary, the Jews of the town and the county were confined in a ghetto, then gathered in a camp established on the outskirts, where the Jews of neighboring towns were also brought. The convoys departed in early summer toward the extermination center in Upper Silesia.
