The small community of the island is deported at the same time as that of Rhodes.
Kos, in the Dodecanese, had belonged to Italy since the beginning of the century and passed under German control after the Italian armistice. Its Jewish community, very ancient but reduced to a few dozen families, lived around the port synagogue.
It was assembled in midsummer and embarked together with the community of Rhodes: the two groups crossed the Aegean Sea on barges, reached Piraeus, and were then transported by train to Auschwitz. A few families of Turkish nationality were removed from the convoy by the Turkish consul.
