A mining town in the north of the kingdom, Salgótarján sees its Jews enclosed in a closed quarter then led to the gathering camps in the region, from which convoys depart in mid-spring.
Salgótarján, a mining and steelmaking city in Nógrád, was home to a community born of the industrialization of the coal basin, whose families ran shops, workshops, and liberal professions. It had its own synagogue and school. Following the German occupation of Hungary, the Jews of the city and the county were confined to a ghetto, then gathered into camps in the region. The convoys departed in early summer toward the extermination center in Upper Silesia; the community disappeared.
