The Romaniote community of the island is gathered in the old fortress then taken by boat and train to Auschwitz.
The Jewish community of Corfu was Romaniote, meaning Greek-speaking and established in the Ionian Islands since Antiquity, with a later Sephardic and Italian contribution. It lived in the Évraïki quarter, at the foot of the old fortress.
At the beginning of summer, following the German occupation of the island, the Jewish population was summoned, gathered in the fortress, then loaded onto barges toward the mainland, from where a train brought them to Auschwitz. The journey lasted nearly three weeks.
