À quelques kilomètres au sud-est de Minsk, sur le domaine d'un ancien kolkhoze, l'occupant installe le site de mise à mort de Maly Trostenets. Il n'a ni l'architecture ni la publicité des camps de l'Opération Reinhard : c'est une ferme, un bois, des fosses, et plus tard un four de fortune. On y conduit les habitants du ghetto de Minsk au fur et à mesure de sa liquidation, mais aussi des convois venus de Vienne, de Prague, de Brno, de Königsberg et de Theresienstadt — des familles à qui l'on avait annoncé une réinstallation à l'est.

Les victimes sont fusillées à la descente du train ou asphyxiées dans des camions à gaz pendant le trajet. À l'approche de l'Armée rouge, un commando spécial rouvre les fosses et brûle les corps pour en effacer la trace. C'est ce qui fait de Maly Trostenets, longtemps, le plus grand site d'extermination du territoire soviétique dont on ne savait presque rien.
