A city in the eastern plain, Michalovce saw its community assembled and handed over to spring convoys, with families separated already at the transit camps.
Michalovce, the county seat of Zemplín, maintained an ancient Orthodox community, with its yeshiva, its mutual aid societies, and a market where Jewish merchants from the Laborec basin gathered each week. The measures of the Slovak state had already stripped families of their businesses and workshops when the spring of the convoys arrived: the Jews of the town and the villages of the district were rounded up and directed toward assembly camps, from which trains departed northward. The community of Michalovce was annihilated.
