The Shoah (1939–1945)

Deportation of the Jews of Bardejov

1942·Bardejov

Toll
bilan non établi

The toll is reproduced exactly as the source states it — never rounded, never added to another. Tolls overlap from one event to the next.

A former merchant town in the Carpathians, Bardejov sees its Hasidic community rounded up in spring and taken to assembly camps, from which convoys depart eastward.

Bardejov, a medieval royal town in the Šariš region, had an entire Jewish quarter built around its great synagogue, its ritual bath, and its house of study — an ensemble that travelers considered one of the most complete in Slovakia. Its community, predominantly Hasidic, lived by small trade and craftsmanship. In the spring, the Jews of Bardejov were gathered and handed over to the convoys of the Slovak state; the families departed toward the killing centers of the General Government. The buildings remained; the community that had raised them disappeared.
