Bardejov (in Hungarian Bártfa) is a medieval city of eastern Slovakia (Prešov region), inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List for its historic center. Its Jewish community, founded in the 16th century, became in the 19th century an important center of Orthodox and Hasidic Judaism, with recognized rabbinical institutions. In March–April 1942, the Jews of Bardejov were among the first to be deported to Auschwitz during the large deportations from Slovakia.
