After the defeat of Mohács, Jews were expelled from the free cities of Hungary, including Presbourg — today's Bratislava.
The Kingdom of Hungary had just lost its king and its army to the Ottomans, and the cities, which remained under the crown, turned against their Jews, whom they accused of having favored the enemy; debts contracted toward them were annulled. The Jewish community of Presbourg later reconstituted itself and became, in the nineteenth century, the heartland of Hungarian Orthodoxy.
