assaults and looting against Jews returning from camps, demanding their property
In early August 1946, the congress of former partisans held in Bratislava was followed by attacks against Jews who had returned from the camps, which spread to other cities in Slovakia. Homes were invaded, passersby beaten in the streets, shops ransacked; the victims numbered among the wounded, and order was only restored after several days.
The immediate cause was the restitution of property: the survivors, by reclaiming the houses, businesses, and lands that had been taken from them under the Slovak State, came into conflict with those who were occupying them. The violence weighed heavily in the decision to emigrate that most of those who had returned would make in the following years.
