A former episcopal city in western Slovakia, seat of a renowned talmudic school, Nitra sees its Jews registered then rounded up and handed over to convoys, part of the community remaining for a time protected by exemptions that would later be withdrawn.
Nitra, the oldest city in Slovakia, was home to a sizable community and a yeshiva whose reputation extended far beyond the country's borders. Its merchants, craftsmen, and physicians had long held a place in the life of the city, and its synagogue was among the most remarkable in the country. The spring of the convoys swept away the Jews of Nitra and its district: gathered in requisitioned premises, they were transported through the transit camp toward the northern border. The community was annihilated, and the yeshiva with it.
