City in eastern Slovakia, seat of an ancient community and its schools, Prešov sees its Jews registered, deprived of their property and trades, then rounded up and taken to assembly camps from which convoys depart.
Prešov, capital of Šariš, was home to one of the oldest and most populous Jewish communities in eastern Slovakia, divided since the previous century's congress between Orthodox, Neolog, and status quo ante factions, each with its own synagogue and cemetery. In the spring, the authorities of the Slovak state gathered the Jews of the city and its district into requisitioned premises, then transported them through the transit camp to the northern border. The deportations of that year emptied the city of its Jewish families; the rare survivors returned to a destroyed community.
