Jews returning from the camps in Slovakia encountered, upon their return, the hostility of those who had occupied their homes and their businesses. A first wave of riots had broken out in Bratislava two years earlier, during a partisan congress.
In August, a second wave struck the city. Survivors were accosted in the streets, homes and community premises attacked, people injured. The violence spread to other Slovak localities in the days that followed.
It hastened the departure of the survivors: most left Czechoslovakia before the communist regime closed the borders. The community of Bratislava, one of the most learned in Central Europe, never recovered.
