the conversos Hernando Alonso and Gonzalo de Morales burned by the Inquisition of New Spain
The Inquisition of New Spain, established shortly after the conquest, held its first auto-da-fé in the main square of Mexico City. The condemned, Hernando Alonso and Gonzalo de Morales, were *conversos* who had come with the troops of Cortés; the former had taken part in the capture of the city and received lands as a reward.
The episode shows that the legislation against new Christians had crossed the Atlantic with the conquerors, even as the emigration of *conversos* to the Indies was officially prohibited. Trials for judaizing would continue in Mexico City and Lima for two centuries, until the great autos-da-fé of the seventeenth century.
