An auto-da-fé was held in Mexico against New Christians accused of Judaizing.
The tribunal of the Inquisition of New Spain had been established a generation earlier, and it pursued, throughout the following two centuries, the descendants of Portuguese converts who had come to settle in the West Indies. The records of its trials are the principal source on the lives of these families, who secretly passed down a few prayers and the fast of Esther.
