judaizers condemned by the Inquisition of New Spain
The tribunal of Mexico held in the capital of New Spain the most significant auto-da-fé in its history, the culmination of a decade of arrests targeting merchants of Portuguese origin. Among the condemned was Tomás Treviño de Sobremonte, whose refusal to recant was long reported by the tribunal's chroniclers.
The ceremony, public and minutely regulated, was described in a printed account that circulated as far as Spain. After it, trials for Judaism became rare in New Spain: the milieu being targeted had been destroyed, and the American Inquisition turned toward other offenses of faith.
