its president Solomon Mikhoels is killed and his death made to look like a road accident; the committee will be dissolved and its leaders arrested

In January 1948, Solomon Mikhoels, actor and director of the Moscow State Jewish Theatre, president of the Jewish Anti-Fascist Committee, was killed in Minsk, where he had been sent on an official mission. The body was found in the early morning in a snow-covered street, and the death disguised as a traffic accident; the State gave him a national funeral.

The murder, ordered at the highest levels of Soviet power, opened the campaign against the Jewish Anti-Fascist Committee and against the "rootless cosmopolitans." The Committee was dissolved, its writers and poets arrested, then shot after a secret trial; the theatre was closed. What remained of Jewish cultural institutions in the Soviet Union disappeared within a few years.
