Ben Yehuda Street was the commercial artery of the center of Jewish Jerusalem, lined with residential buildings, cafés, and shops. On the morning of February twenty-second, three trucks loaded with explosives were brought there by men in British uniform and blew up several buildings.
The attack, one of the deadliest of the civil war preceding the end of the Mandate, struck a civilian population at the heart of the city. Rescue workers cleared the rubble for hours; entire families disappeared beneath the collapsed buildings.
It belongs to the series of attacks of that winter, following that of the *Palestine Post* and before that of the Jewish Agency, which targeted the civilian and administrative centers of the city.
