The Fifth Syrian War pitted the Lagid Ptolemy V against the Seleucid Antiochos III on the very soil of Judea, which changed hands following the battle of Panion. The country served as a maneuvering ground for two armies, and Jerusalem endured two successive sieges.

Antiochos III subsequently granted the city a charter exempting the senate, the priests, and the scribes from taxation, and authorizing the reconstruction of what the war had ruined: the text, preserved by Flavius Josèphe, speaks eloquently of the extent of the destruction that needed to be repaired.
