Samaritan and Jewish villages burned, executions ordered by Quadratus
Galilean pilgrims traveling up to Jerusalem were attacked in a Samaritan village, and the procurator Ventidius Cumanus, suspected of having been bribed, refused to investigate. Jewish bands led by Eleazar ben Dinaï then burned villages in Samaria.
The legate of Syria Ummidius Quadratus came to arbitrate, had the captives from both sides crucified and their leaders executed at Lydda, then sent the procurator and the high priest to Rome. What had been a border dispute between two neighboring peoples had become an affair of Empire, and it left Judea in a state of brigandage that did not cease until the war.
