Un nouvel autodafé fut célébré à Tolède, où des conversos furent condamnés et brûlés, plusieurs en effigie parce qu'ils avaient fui ou étaient morts avant leur sentence.

Le procès des morts et des absents n'était pas un rite vide : la condamnation posthume permettait la confiscation des biens et l'infamie de la descendance. Il faut lire ainsi les chiffres des autodafés : derrière chaque sentence il y a un patrimoine, et derrière chaque bûcher une famille déclassée pour trois générations.
