Anti-converso riot

The hostility against *conversos*, which the *Sentencia-Estatuto* had institutionalized eighteen years earlier, once again degenerated into street fighting in Toledo.

The converts, numerous, wealthy, and present in the chapter and the municipality, took up arms this time and held entire neighborhoods; the confrontation lasted several days and fire ravaged the commercial center. It ended in their defeat, the execution of their leaders, and new exclusions.

These confrontations no longer targeted Jews but the baptized: they showed that conversion, presented as the solution, had created a new problem. The Inquisition, established a decade later, would take it upon itself to resolve it.
