the Jewish quarter plundered and burned

At the death of Alphonse VI, whose reign had been favorable to the Jews of Castille, a riot broke out in Tolède and the Jewish quarter was looted and burned. The king had employed Jews at court and in tax collection, which the Council of Gérone had specifically sought to prohibit.

Queen Urraque had to restore order and compensate the victims. The episode inaugurated a series of Castilian riots occurring at every vacancy of power: the community was protected by the king, and therefore exposed each time the king was absent. Tolède nonetheless remained, for three more centuries, the foremost Jewish city of the peninsula.
