The Jewish home for the elderly on Reichenbachstrasse, in Munich, was located above the community center, in the neighborhood where the community had reconstituted itself after the war. Its residents were mostly survivors of the camps and ghettos.

An arson fire was set in the stairwell on the evening of February thirteenth. The fire cut off the only exit; residents died of asphyxiation, others by jumping from the windows. Seven people perished, nearly all of them having survived the Shoah.

The investigation never reached a conclusion: neither the Palestinian leads, nor the far-right leads, nor that of the German radical left were ever established. It is the deadliest antisemitic attack committed in the Federal Republic of Germany.
