Des hommes du groupe Septembre noir entrent dans le village olympique de Munich, tuent deux membres de la délégation israélienne et retiennent les autres en otages une journée entière, devant les caméras du monde entier. Le gouvernement allemand refuse l'aide d'une unité israélienne et tente une opération à l'aérodrome de Fürstenfeldbruck, montée dans la précipitation : tous les otages y sont tués.

Les Jeux se poursuivent après une interruption d'un jour. Il faudra des décennies pour que le Comité international olympique accepte une minute de silence, et pour que l'Allemagne reconnaisse les défaillances de sa police et indemnise les familles.
