The Shoah (1939–1945)
Rotterdam Jew Roundup
oct. 1942·Rotterdam
The toll is reproduced exactly as the source states it — never rounded, never added to another. Tolls overlap from one event to the next.
The Jews of Rotterdam are arrested and taken to Westerbork.
In Rotterdam, whose center had been razed by the invasion's bombardment, the Jewish community was rounded up neighborhood by neighborhood, then taken to Westerbork. Families had been living scattered throughout the suburbs since the destruction of the old center, yet this did not prevent the arrests: the municipal registry provided every address. The great synagogue had already burned during the bombardment; the postwar community was an entirely new community.
