Przysucha, a small town in the Świętokrzyskie Mountains, was one of the great centers of Polish Hasidism, whose house of study had trained masters known throughout Poland. Jews formed the majority of its population. Under occupation, a closed quarter gathered the inhabitants and Jews from neighboring villages; hunger preceded the deportations. In autumn, the town was emptied: its inhabitants were led in columns to Opoczno and then transported to Treblinka. The house of study and the cemetery of Przysucha, places of pilgrimage before the war, were abandoned.
