La Nuit de Cristal fut présentée comme une réaction spontanée à l'attentat de Paris contre Ernst vom Rath ; elle fut ordonnée depuis Munich, où les chefs du parti étaient réunis, et exécutée par les SA et par des militants en civil, sur instructions transmises par téléphone dans la nuit. Les synagogues d'Allemagne, d'Autriche et des Sudètes furent incendiées sans que les pompiers interviennent autrement que pour protéger les immeubles voisins ; les vitrines des commerces furent brisées, ce à quoi le nom est resté attaché.

Ce qui suivit compte davantage que la nuit elle-même. Les hommes arrêtés furent envoyés à Dachau, à Buchenwald et à Sachsenhausen — première déportation de masse pour le seul motif d'être juif ; la communauté fut condamnée à une amende collective pour les dégâts subis ; les compagnies d'assurances furent déliées de leurs obligations. L'exclusion économique devint totale dans les semaines qui suivirent. Pour beaucoup de familles, c'est cette nuit qui décida du départ, quand le départ restait possible.
