Le boycott du premier avril fut la première mesure antijuive nationale de l'Allemagne nazie, décidée moins de trois mois après l'accession de Hitler à la chancellerie. Des SA postés devant les magasins, les cabinets d'avocats et les cabinets médicaux en interdisaient l'entrée, pancartes à la main ; des étoiles et des inscriptions furent peintes sur les vitrines. L'opération, présentée comme une riposte aux campagnes de presse étrangères, fut annoncée pour une durée indéterminée et suspendue au bout d'une journée, devant la réaction internationale et les réticences économiques.

Elle n'en fixa pas moins la méthode, et elle fut suivie dès la semaine suivante par la loi sur la restauration de la fonction publique, qui écarta les Juifs de l'administration, de l'enseignement et de la justice. Le boycott commercial, abandonné comme opération ponctuelle, devint un régime permanent exercé par la pression locale.
