Les conversions de masse qui avaient suivi les massacres de 1391 avaient produit en Castille une population de conversos que rien, en droit, ne distinguait plus des autres chrétiens — et que tout, dans les faits, désignait. Les statuts de pureté de sang adoptés à Tolède au milieu du siècle leur fermaient les charges publiques ; les prédicateurs les disaient chrétiens de façade.

L'émeute partit de Cordoue en mars, lors d'une procession de la confrérie de la Charité, sur la rumeur qu'une jeune fille de la maison d'un converso avait souillé l'image de la Vierge. Le quartier des convertis fut pillé et brûlé deux jours durant. La violence gagna Montoro, Andújar, Jaén — où le connétable Miguel Lucas de Iranzo, qui protégeait les conversos, fut abattu dans l'église —, puis Ségovie et plusieurs villes d'Andalousie et de Castille.

Ces émeutes pèsent dans l'histoire du siècle : c'est sur elles que s'appuya l'argument selon lequel seul un tribunal de la foi pouvait trancher la sincérité des convertis. L'Inquisition espagnole fut instituée sept ans après.
